Grinding teeth not to be that woman,
the same woman.
That woman in the old photograph,
I know her loneliness,
her youth waning -
her bath filled with empty shampoo bottles,
the holes in her panties,
the things she said that didn’t matter,
I know her well…
It’s the same woman
enabling everything.

I don’t want to be that woman
going up the stairs,
those same steps,
the keys,
the groceries, her fridge,
the pickle jar is alien to me,
but I have the same jar in my fridge -
it’s the same.
The same pillow,
all the little things in the drawers,
the silence,
the dry sweat.
That woman,
this woman,
ageing women, stripped to the basics women,
the Word on our mattress.
